- FORGE - Fate Of Repository Gases
Long-term radioactive waste management usually considers final disposal in a deep geological repository. This includes an engineered barrier system working in conjunction with the surrounding host rocks to minimise migration of radioactivity. As the repository system evolves, gases may be produced, such as hydrogen from the corrosion of metals and from the radiolysis of water, and radon from the radioactive decay of some of the waste. If present, biodegradable wastes can also produce carbon dioxide and methane. Understanding how these gases move in a repository setting is a topic identified for further study. The FORGE project has been initiated to address key gas migration issues in repository performance assessment.
- ReCosy - Redox Phenomena Controlling Systems
Main objectives of ReCosy are the sound understanding of redox phenomena controlling the long-term release/retention of radionuclides in nuclear waste disposal and providing tools to apply the result to Performance Assessment/Safety Case.
- CarboWaste - Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite and other Carbonaceous Waste
The objective of this project is the development of best practices in the retrieval, treatment and disposal of irradiated graphite & carbonaceous waste, like structural material e.g. non-graphitised carbon bricks and fuel coatings (pyrocarbon, silicon carbide). It addresses both legacy waste as well as waste from future generations of graphite-based nuclear fuel.
- PEBS - Long-term Performance of the Engineered Barrier System
The main aim of the project PEBS is to evaluate the sealing and barrier performance of the EBS (Engineered Barrier System) with time, through development of a comprehensive approach involving experiments, model development and consideration of the potential impacts on long-term safety functions.
